River City Mayor Lyda Krewson has signed onto an initiative with mayors across the country targeting antisemitism. This is a very good thing! I’m Jewish. Hatred is unacceptable!
Calling on mayors and municipal leaders to affirm that antisemitism is incompatible with the fundamental democratic values. This what the American Jewish Committee’s Mayors United Against Antisemitism effort is doing. However, there is a commit to working within and across U.S. communities to advance the values of respectful coexistence, according to a news release.
Antisemitism Incidents in River City Are On the Rise
Amidst ongoing concerns about antisemitism in the United States, this effort is going to take place. 2,107 antisemitic incidents recording in 2019, this is reporting by Anti-Defamation League. Also, a 12% increase from 2018, from an annual audit.
Krewson is Joined by Adjacent Mayor Quinton Lucas
In fact, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas was also among the 132 mayors to sign the initiative.
“The AJC St. Louis is honoring to have Mayors Krewson and Lucas. They are leading the way. Both are taking a stand against antisemitism in Missouri. They are representatives of the largest cities in our state.” Strengthening the national movement, we hope many of their colleagues will join them,” said Terry Bloomberg, chair of the Task Force to Combat Antisemitism on St. Louis’s AJC Board, stated in the news release.
This is a statement from the mayors: “We want to declare a core set of principles. Moreover, these include the denunciation of anti-Jewish hatred in all forms. Also the refusal of the notion that antisemitic acts may ever be justified by one’s view on the actions or existence of the state of Israel.
Moreover, there should be a declaration that antisemitism and any prejudices due to religious differences are inconsistent with core American values. In fact, the belief that the promotion of mutual understanding and respect among all citizens is essential to good governance and democratic life, the release states.
